The Astrology of Sex
What does a birth chart reveal about sexual expression—and what actually creates attraction?
While astrology can’t be reduced to a single placement, there are clear patterns that describe how desire, passion, and chemistry show up. This is a broad overview of the key indicators, using my own chart at times for context.
Before we begin, a simple framework:
The sign reflects the psychology
The house shows where it plays out
The planets are the drivers
Mars: Desire, Drive, and Passion
Any conversation about sex in the chart starts with Mars.
Mars isn’t just action—it’s desire, instinct, and passion. It’s how you pursue what you want, what turns you on, and how you express sexual energy.
The sign shows how you approach sex
The house shows where that energy plays out
In my chart, Mars is in Sagittarius on the cusp of the 12th house, and I read it as a 12th house placement.
Sagittarius brings exploration, openness, and a desire to push boundaries. The 12th house adds a private, internal layer—where desire develops beneath the surface and needs trust and safety to fully emerge.
So for me, sexual expression is both exploratory and deeply personal. It’s not always immediate—but once it connects, it connects fully.
Now compare that to something like:
Mars in Aries in the 3rd house
This would be much more direct, verbal, and immediate. Flirtation might be bold, fast, and playful. Desire is expressed through conversation, banter, and mental stimulation, with very little hesitation.
Same planet—completely different experience.
The Fifth House: Attraction, Play, and Pleasure
The fifth house is where attraction begins. This is chemistry, flirtation, excitement—what pulls you in and makes something feel fun and engaging.
In my chart, most of the fifth house is in Gemini, but the only celestial body there is Juno in Taurus. That creates a push-pull dynamic:
Gemini wants variety, curiosity, stimulation
Taurus wants sensuality, consistency, and depth
Juno adds the need for meaningful connection
So while curiosity is part of the experience, surface-level encounters don’t hold my attention. There has to be something real underneath it.
Another example:
Sun and Mercury in Virgo in the 5th house
Flirtation here might be subtle, thoughtful, and detail-oriented. Attraction builds through observation, conversation, and noticing the small things. It may not be flashy—but it’s intentional and deeply engaging over time.
The 8th House: Intimacy and Depth
If the fifth house is attraction, the eighth house is intimacy. This is where sex becomes something deeper—connection, vulnerability, trust, and shared experience.
In my chart, Cancer is on the cusp of the 8th house, with the South Node in Leo. This can point to a past tendency to use intimacy or attention as validation, with growth coming through developing emotional security that isn’t dependent on external response. It’s a shift from being seen… to actually feeling safe.
Another example:
Mars in Capricorn in the 8th house
This would approach intimacy with seriousness and intention. Desire builds slowly, but once established, it’s steady and committed. There’s a need for trust and control, and a focus on depth over spontaneity.
Other Indicators of Sexual Expression
Mars and the houses are only part of the story.
Additional layers include:
Black Moon Lilith — raw, unfiltered sexuality; where desire resists conditioning
Asteroid Eros (433)
Asteroid Amor (1221) — romantic love and emotional affection; how desire blends with care
Asteroid Psyche (16) — emotional and soul-level connection, often tied to intimacy beyond the physi — erotic attraction and what draws you in instinctively
These don’t replace Mars—they refine it.
Scorpio, Pluto, and Sexual Magnetism
Let’s be clear: Pluto is sexy.
Not surface-level attraction—magnetism. The kind you feel before you can explain it.
Mars is desire, drive, and passion
Pluto is intensity, power, and sexual presence
Scorpio is the sign ruled by both—and it shows
People with strong Pluto or Scorpio placements often carry that energy naturally. It’s not always obvious, but it’s almost always felt.
Pluto in the 1st house → sexuality is part of the physical presence
Mars in the 1st house → confident, direct, visibly passionate
Pluto or Scorpio in the 10th house → others may project sexuality or intensity onto you
Scorpio placements—especially the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant—often come with a depth and focus that reads as sexual energy, whether that’s the intention or not.
And when Mars and Pluto are both strong? That’s where things get very powerful. Passion + magnetism = hard to ignore.
How It Evolves Over Time
Sexual expression changes—and one of the clearest ways to see that is through progressions. Progressions describe internal development. They show how your desires and identity shift over time—not external events, but how you experience yourself.
In my chart, my progressed Mars is currently in Capricorn in the 1st house.
This reflects a shift toward a more grounded, embodied expression of desire. There’s less focus on exploration for its own sake, and more emphasis on connection that feels stable, aligned, and real.
Being in the 1st house, this shows up in how I carry myself—confidence, presence, and how I engage with attraction more directly.
What About Venus?
You may have noticed Venus isn’t included here.
That’s intentional.
Mars speaks to desire and passion—but Venus deserves her own conversation when it comes to attraction, connection, and what we’re drawn to in others.
Exploring Your Own Chart
If you’re curious about how this shows up in your own chart, a Mars Snapshot Report is a great place to start.
If you book, just let me know you’d like a focus on sexual expression and passion, and I’ll tailor the interpretation accordingly.
Also, please note that the placements I chose assume no other aspects affect their expression - while reading astrology in a vacuum isn’t ideal, sometimes it’s necessary.
